At last, some video content for this website! I recorded this video ‘showreel’ in September 2012. Seems like a lifetime ago now, however many of these pieces of music have stood the test of time and are now staples in my wedding guitar repertoire. “Why the delay in posting the video?” I hear you ask. Good question! The answer: I have no idea. I guess I’m just lazy. Anyway, here it is! I hope you enjoy it.
The first piece is called ‘Birds Flew Over The Spire’ by Gary Ryan. This is actually a piece from one of the Trinity Guildhall graded books, but it’s such a lovely piece of music that I decided to put it into my wedding guitar repertoire. The second piece is a real classic for the classical guitar; Prelude in D by J.S Bach. This piece of music is a popular choice for wedding ceremonies. The third piece is a short study by Carcassi. It’s quite a simple little piece but it’s so perfect that I just have to include it in my wedding repertoire. The fourth piece is Air on the G String. I was once asked for “the song from that old cigar advert“. I had no idea what it was at the time but a quick Google search revealed that it was this piece of music. Luckily it was in my repertoire so I was able to play it on that occasion. The fifth piece is ‘All The Things You Are’. One of many jazz pieces I have learned in the past couple of years. The sixth piece is ‘Blue Moon’; another light jazz piece arranged for the classical guitar. The seventh piece, Soledad, is another piece from the Trinity Guildhall graded books. I like this tune a lot so I tend to play it whenever opportunity arises. The next piece, Manha de Carnaval is one of my all time favourites. I was introduced to this song at music college and have loved it ever since. In the video I’m playing a transcription of one of Baden Powel’s live performances. Next up is an arrangement of ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen. The introduction to this piece is from the Jeff Buckley cover. Lastly is my arrangement of ‘Wonderful Tonight’ by Eric Clapton.
This video was recorded around the same time as I got my iPad. Unfortunately at this point I didn’t have my page turner which means each music sample is rather short. I have since acquired a page turn device which allows me to turn pages without taking my hands off the guitar to jab at the iPad’s screen. The result; over 5 hours worth of music on one device. No more faffing around with books or 10 page pieces of music sellotaped together. This has been something of a game changer when it comes to playing guitar at weddings. I no longer have to carry a backpack full of unsightly books to each event. The iPad is very discreet and helps me move swiftly from one piece of music to another. I like to think that this streamlined feature of my performance is a bonus for my clients, however to be honest I’m just happy that I no longer need to carry around half a tonne of music books everywhere I go.
I hope you enjoy watching the video above. If you would like me to play at your wedding or event, please feel free to get in touch.
All the best,
Ed
